Do you experience dental anxiety? If you are one of the millions of Americans who avoids dental appointments due to fear or anxiety, visit the office of Dr. Paul Denemark, a board certified periodontist. Dr. Denemark and his staff of professionals understand that not every patient is comfortable in the dental chair and offer sedation dental care to relieve your anxiety.
What is Sedation Dental Care?
Sedation dental care affords you the opportunity to relax under minimal, moderate, or deep sedation when undergoing dental procedures. With minimal sedation, you will be able to respond verbally and physically at all times and will remember the procedure. Moderate sedation provides even greater relaxation but limits your responsiveness and memory of the procedure. Deep sedation is for patients who experience terror at the thought of dental work, as it renders you unable to respond to any stimulus and unable to recall anything about the visit.
Types of Sedation Dental Care
This method is the familiar injection utilized to numb small areas of the mouth and is often used in conjunction with laughing gas. The effects wear off after a few hours.
Laughing gas is commonly used in sedation dental care. Within five minutes of inhalation, patients feel euphoric and relaxed. An advantage of this sedation method is that the effects clear up as soon as the patient stops inhaling the gas.
If you opt for oral sedation dental care, Dr. Denemark will provide a sedative pill for you to take an hour before your procedure. The sedative will relax you and lessen your anxiety; however, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
This is the strongest tool in sedation dental care. With this method, sedatives are administered intravenously by Dr. Denemark, who is trained and certified to provide this service. Your vital signs are monitored during the procedure, and when you awaken, you will not remember the work performed.
